How to Write a UK CV in 2026 (With ATS Tips)

If you've updated your CV recently and still aren't hearing back, you're not alone. The UK job market has changed — and one of the biggest reasons good candidates get overlooked has nothing to do with their experience. It's the software that reads your CV before any human does. Here's what you need to know.

Most UK employers now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter CVs before a human ever reads them. If your CV isn't formatted correctly or lacks the right keywords, it could be rejected automatically – even if you're perfectly qualified for the role.

The good news? Writing an ATS-friendly CV doesn't mean sacrificing readability. Here's how to do both.

1. Use a Clean, Simple Format

Avoid tables, columns, text boxes, headers and footers, and graphics. ATS software often can't read these correctly and may scramble your information. Stick to a single-column layout with clear section headings.

Recommended sections (in order):

  • Personal details (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, location)
  • Personal statement / professional summary
  • Work experience (reverse chronological)
  • Education
  • Skills
  • Optional: Certifications, volunteering, languages

2. Tailor Your CV to Each Job

Read the job description carefully and mirror the language used. If the employer says "stakeholder management", use that exact phrase – not "managing relationships". ATS systems match keywords literally.

Aim to include 5–10 keywords from the job description naturally throughout your CV.

3. Write a Strong Personal Statement

Your personal statement is at the top of your CV and is the first thing employers see. Keep it to 3–4 sentences and focus on:

  • Who you are professionally
  • What you bring to the role
  • What you're looking for next

Example: "Results-driven marketing professional with 5 years' experience in B2B SaaS. Proven track record of increasing the pipeline by 40% through targeted content campaigns. Seeking a senior marketing role where I can lead strategy and mentor a growing team."

4. Quantify Your Achievements

Wherever possible, replace vague statements with numbers. Recruiters and ATS systems both respond better to specifics.

  • ❌ "Managed a team" → ✅ "Managed a team of 8 across 3 locations"
  • ❌ "Improved sales" → ✅ "Increased sales by 32% in 12 months"
  • ❌ "Responsible for customer service" → ✅ "Handled 50+ customer queries daily with a 97% satisfaction rating"

5. Keep It to 2 Pages

UK CVs should be a maximum of 2 pages. If you're early in your career, one page is fine. Anything longer risks losing the recruiter's attention – and some ATS systems truncate longer documents.
